Was there ever any doubt? With her legions of teenybopper fans dragging their parents with them, Miley Cyrus’ Hannah Montana: The Movie found itself in the top spot on the box office this weekend with a massive $34 million.
The big screen version of the hit Disney Channel series was also able to race past Fast & Furious, which followed suit with $28.8 million. While that isn’t a surprise, it’s noteworthy to hear that Hannah Montana: The Movie managed to beat its own franchise. The live-action flick raked in more than the debut of last year’s Hannah Montana: Best of Both Worlds concert movie, and even went past sales for the 3-D Jonas Brothers one. “What she pulled off here, based on tracking, is amazing,” announced Disney distribution president Chuck Viane. “It's a tribute to her and her fan base.”
And it’s one growing fan base that looks like it’s not going to stop soon. Hannah Montana: The Movie is Cyrus’ third No.1 film, aside from Bolt and her Hannah Montana big screen concert. It also became the second-biggest Easter weekend opener of all time, behind 2006's Scary Movie 4, which raked in 40.2 million at its time. For opening day, Hannah Montana: The Movie grossed a total of $17.3 million, which was the biggest ever for a G-rated film.
As for the film’s 16-year-old star and reigning Disney princess, she was more than ecstatic. Over the weekend, Miley Cyrus blogged on her Twitter account and said: “omgomg! my fans rock! the movie is doing great you guys! omg AND its all cause of you!!!!
